Spartans crush Aggies in one game tilt

San Jose State baseball visited UC Davis on Tuesday in a one-game tilt. The Spartans defeated the Aggies handily 10-3.

SJSU came into Tuesday’s game looking to continue its momentum after its series win against Nevada over the weekend.

Sophomore Micky Thompson was tasked with taking down a struggling Aggies ballclub.

Things got off to a rocky start for Thompson as he gave up an early run in the first inning. His command was an issue to begin the game, something that would plague him the rest of the way.

The Spartans were quick to answer back, scoring two runs in the second inning. SJSU played a little small ball, scoring both of its runs on groundouts.

Once again, the free pass continued to be a problem for Thompson. He leads the Spartans in walks with 54. SJSU has given up the most walks in the Mountain West with 295.

Back-to-back walks in the third inning signified the end of the day for him. SJSU sophomore Trevor Ernt was called upon to clean up Thompson’s mess.

Both of the walks came back to bite the Spartans, as the Aggies doubled to go ahead 3-2.

Innings four and five were a stalemate for both teams.

Senior shortstop Ruben Mercado had a huge sixth inning, getting his first big fly of the year. He blasted one over the left field wall, tying the game at 3.

The Aggies fell apart by the seventh inning. The Spartans had a six-run seventh inning, breaking the game open. SJSU capitalized off UC Davis’ shaky pitching and rough defense. Mercado continued his big day scoring two on a single up the middle.

UC Davis made things interesting loading the bases in the ninth, but ultimately couldn’t score.

SJSU will continue its road trip in a weekend series and face conference opponent New Mexico starting on Friday at 5 p.m.
