Recap — Spartans travel to Palo Alto for Cardinal Classic

The San Jose State men’s and women’s track and field team struggled during the Cardinal Classic on Saturday in Stanford, Calif. Neither team managed to place first as a whole and only a handful of players from both teams managed to place in the top three of their respective events.

400 Meter Relay

SJSU’s women track players sophomore Mahkaia Lee, freshman Gabby Spencer, junior Sophie Liao, and sophomore Syndney Bentley placed fourth during the 400 meter relay with a time of 46.84. 

The men’s team consisting of sophomore Jalen Adams, McCants, junior Bashar Barksdale, and freshman Harry Overstreet wasn’t lucky either during the 400 meter placing fourth as well with a time of 41.05.

400 Meter Dash 

Sophomore sprinter Bentley from the women’s squad placed second during the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.79

Junior sprinter Mikael Tyler did not place well in the 400 meter dash as he came in seventh with a time of 49.6.

100 Meter Dash

During the women’s 100 meter dash SJSU struggled but managed to be in the top ten, Spencer came in eighth with a time of 12.16 and Liao followed behind ending with 12.26.

Adams was the only player from the men’s team to place in the top 10, coming in tenth place with a time of 11.10. Jamar Simpson came in 13th with a time of 11.43,  William Dumas trailed behind with 11.49 and lastly Andy Wang came in 17th with a time of 11.58.

1600 Meter Run

The women’s team did well in the 1600 meter run as freshman Jicel Fernandez, Spencer, Bentley, and Liao came in second with a time of 3:56.09. 

The men’s squad of junior Mikael Tyler, freshman Christian Rodriguez, Barksdale, and Micah Hairston ended in third overall with a time of 3:14.60.

Hurdles

Spartan’s Hairston finished in first for the men’s 110 meter hurdles ending with a time of 14.45. Hairston then followed up with a second place win during the men’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.13.

Field

The lucky number must’ve been five during the long jump portion of the international because men’s freshman jumper Kyle Jankans and women’s Emilia Sjostrand both placed fifth overall. Jankans had a distance of 6.82m and Sjostrand had a distance of 5.67m.

The women’s team did particularly well in terms of jumps as Lina Shubert dominated in the women’s high jump as she came in first with a distance of 1.60m. Sjostrand came in second during the women’s triple jump with a distance of 12.51.

Spartan’s junior thrower Bryan Quintero claimed third in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 59.09m. Bryson Smith followed behind in fourth with a distance of 53.90m.

SJSU will be returning to Stanford University on April 1st to compete in the Stanford Invitational.
