The San Jose State women’s water polo team (11-11, 0-3 MPSF) woke up bright and early Tuesday morning to go head-to-head with the Santa Clara University Broncos (6-12, 1-1 WCC) at home.
Senior Clarissa Wandinger got the ball in the net early, and the Spartans started the first period with a 1-0 lead against the Broncos.
SCU’s Halley Seed followed behind tying the game but this would be a short celebration as junior Lior Ben David ended the first period by giving SJSU another goal, 2-1.
Throughout the first period SCU attempted shot after shot but couldn’t get through the Spartans’ defense, specifically against SJSU’s senior goalkeeper Hannah Henry’s killer skills from stopping the ball.
An immediate point followed the quarter break due to a penalty shot from Freshman Cila David, Spartans led 3-1.
The Broncos accomplished a power play goal by Lauren Baglietto firing a shot to the back of the net with an assist from Harper Daniels.
SJSU immediately came back with full force, not letting SCU get close to its lead while Wandinger shot the ball and scored, 4-2.
The Broncos were unable to take the lead from the Spartans as the game went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging shots but SJSU still came out on top to close out the end of the second period, 6-3.
The third period was dominated by SJSU, adding three more goals to its lead.SCU was fighting to get the ball into the goal, and in the end didn’t complete any of the shots thrown, losing 9-3.
The Broncos could not keep up with the Spartans’ momentum and only were able to add two goals to their score while SJSU continued to sweep SCU by adding three more goals in the fourth period, 12-4.
The Spartans secured the win against the Broncos 13-5 and managed to snap their three-game losing streak.
SJSU will be playing Indiana University on Saturday at 8 a.m. (PT) in Bloomington.
