Men’s soccer preview: SJSU at UTRGV

Spartans men’s soccer (6-5-2, 4-1-1 WAC) travels to Rio Grande Valley, Texas to take on the Vaqueros (6-5-0, 3-2-0) in another conference match-up.

San Jose State is heading south after beating No. 10 Grand Canyon men’s soccer team that was on an eight-game winning streak.

This is SJSU’s first win over a top-10 opponent since defeating No. 2 New Mexico in 2005.

SJSU is currently in third in the WAC standings behind only the Falcons and the Lopes.

The Vaqueros are currently at the seventh spot in the WAC standing.

Looking back at SJSU’s last match, the Spartans scored both of their goals in the first 20 minutes.

Senior midfielder Willy Miranda capitalized on an assist from senior midfielder Max Allen and senior forward Rudi Castro in the ninth minute.

With this goal, Miranda sets a college career-high with five goals in a season.

Miranda continues to be a player to watch this upcoming match.

They followed up with their second unanswered goal in the 17th minute by junior defender Kasper Poulsgaard making that his second goal of his college career.

The University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is also coming off of a win. They beat Houston Baptist University 1-0 at home.

Freshman defender Javier Chavez scored the only goal of the game for the Vaqueros.

A player to watch for the Vaqueros is graduate midfielder Yusuf Cueceoglu who has four goals and five assists on the season.

The Spartans try to make this their six-match without a loss while the Vaqueros are going for back-to-back victories at home.

SJSU men’s soccer plays its game at UTRGV at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex on 1 p.m. Friday.
