San Jose State women’s basketball (1-1, 0-0 MW) will wrap up its three-game road trip in Sacramento as they are set to face off against the Sacramento State Hornets (0-1, 0-0 BS).
The Spartans split their opening set of games in Washington with a 86-56 blowout loss to Washington State and a 77-76 win against Eastern Washington.
Junior guard Ella Ogier will be the player to watch for the Spartans after a standout performance against the Eagles. Ogier finished the game with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Hornets will be looking to bounce back after a tough 90-71 loss in their first game of the season against Berkeley. Sacramento shot 44.6% from the field and was 9-22 on from beyond the arc.
One player that could ignite this Hornet offense is graduate student guard Lianna Tillman. Tillman racked up a team-high 27 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
In the matchup against Eastern Washington, three SJSU players achieved double-digit scoring. The Spartans will need to continue to find this depth on offense to give them the edge on offense.
Sacramento State turned the ball over 19 times against the Bears which led to them being outscored 22-6 on points off turnovers. Limiting these giveaways as well as playing tighter defense to prevent opposing scoring runs will be crucial for the Hornets.
SJSU has defeated Sacramento in their last two meetings and holds an overall record of 7-12 against them. The last time these two teams faced off was during the 2019 – 2020 season with the Spartans claiming victory by a score of 73-67.
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday at The Nest in Sacramento and on ESPN+.
