Spartans earn first win of the season on the road

San Jose State women’s basketball (1-1) defeated Eastern Washington (0-1) 77-67 at Cheney, Wash. to as they earned their its first win of the new season.

The Spartans came out of the gates firing as they put up 27 points in the first quarter. SJSU junior guard Ella Ogier and senior guard A’Tyanna Gaulden ledt the way as each of the guards were 3-3 from the three-point line.

SJSU was also 7-7 at the free-throw line and 10-11 in the first half.

The Eagles shot just under 32 percent in the first quarter making 6-19 from the field.

The second quarter was not better for either team. SJSU shot just 25 percent from the field and Eastern Washington shot 22 percent. They combined 8-34 from the field.

SJSU senior forward Cydni Lewis was 0-7 in the first half but captured six rebounds.

The Spartans dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Eagles 23-15 off defensive rebounds and 30-21 overall at the end of the first half.

The half ended 39-28 in favor of the Spartans.

The second half started out as a combination of the first two quarters as the Spartans shot just under 32 percent from the field with 14 rebounds.

The Spartans finished red hot from the free-throw line making 20-23.

Lewis finished the game with a team-leading and career high 17 rebounds while Ogier finished the game as SJSU’s the leading scorer with 20 points.

The Spartans host their first game of the season against the Sacramento State Hornets on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
