Tied at the top: Volleyball defends home court to beat Utah State

The San Jose State volleyball team (17-8, 11-4 MW) managed to defeat Utah State (19-8, 11-4 MW) at home on Thursday by the score of 3-1.

After going up 2-0 in the match, the Spartans dropped the third set by a close score of 26-24. They were able to close out the fourth and final set by the score of 25-22.

Sophomore outside hitter Letizia Cammillucci led the way with a game high 19 kills. She also had eight digs in the win.

Senior libero Sarah Smevog had a game high 21 digs in the Match, she leads the MW in digs with 412.

The Spartans won the battle of aces against the Aggies 14-4.

Sophomore setter Mia Schafer recorded 48 of the team’s 58 assists. She also had 19 digs in the match. Shafer leads the Mountain West  in assists with 901.

Utah State managed to get 13 blocks against SJSU, six of those came from senior middle blocker Corinne Larsen. Larsen leads the MW in blocks with 119. 

This win puts the Spartans tied in second place with the Aggies in the MW. The team is only one game back of first place behind Colorado State. It also clinched the Spartans a spot in the MW championship. 

With only three games left in the regular season, the Spartans look to swipe first place in the standings before the MW championship begins.  

The next match will be the final home game of the season. SJSU takes on Boise State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Spartan Gym in Yosh Uchida Hall.
