WVB preview: Spartans hope to recover against Utah State

By Autumn Blue — Reporter

San Jose State women’s volleyball (16-8, 10-4 MW) will be hosting the Utah State University Aggies (19-7, 11-3 MW) on Thursday afternoon.

The Spartans are coming back from Colorado against the Colorado State University Rams (16-8, 12-3 MW) from a devastating sweep 3-0 which ended their six-game win streak.

This was a pretty catastrophic game this season for SJSU as they were obliterated by CSU’s kills and aces. For the first time, this season the Spartans weren’t able to complete a service ace through the entire match.

Graduate student outside hitter Latahevai Lousi scarcely made it through the match with 10 kills and was the only player to secure double-digit kills. Senior outside hitter Haylee Nelson followed with nine kills and managed to lock down two blocks.

Senior middle blocker Ryann Thomison had six kills and also led the Spartans with three block assists. She also hit a team-best .385 in the match.

SJSU will be going head-to-head with UT once again in a battle for the Mountain West Conference. The Spartans played the Aggies a month ago Oct. 2  where they were swept 3-0.

The Spartans were able to keep up with the Aggies through most of the match but fell short during the last couple of plays.

UT is currently holding the second-ranking in the Mountain West Conference standings while SJSU follows behind in third.

From a statistical standpoint, both teams seem to be eerily related in stats when comparing the two. The Spartans have 1155 kills on the season compared to the Aggies’ 1326 kills, 160 aces v.s. the Aggies’ 158 aces and 1341 digs against the Aggies’ 1318 digs.

UT has won their last two matches, but if SJSU perseveres they could end the night tied for second place in the conference standings.

You can watch the Spartans and the Aggies battle against each other Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Spartan Gym at Yosh Uchida Hall or on Twitter @SanJoseStateVB.
