San Jose State men’s soccer head coach Simon Tobin has won the Western Athletic Conference coach of the year award.
This season, Tobin coached the Spartans to a 9-6-3 overall record, a 7-2-2 conference record and season high nine-match unbeaten streak.
Since taking over the head coaching role in 2014, Tobin has started to turn this program around. He has led the Spartans to the WAC championship game twice in 2017 and 2018. There have also been a total of 26 players from SJSU that have won All-Western Athletic Conference teams under Tobin, including three this season.
It is the second straight season the team has had a winning record after having eight straight losing seasons from 2012-2019.
A huge part of the success for the Spartans has been the defense. The team’s six shutouts this season put them tied for first in the WAC.
Discipline has been another factor as the Spartans are one of the least penalized teams in the conference. The team only had 22 yellow cards this season, only one off from the lead held by Houston Baptist.
SJSU’s next game will be in the 2021 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Spartans are the #No. 4 seed and will take on the No.#5 seed Utah Valley on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at GCU Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.
