San Jose State men’s soccer (6-5-2, 4-1-1 WAC) gave a warm welcome to No. 10 Grand Canyon (10-2-0, 5-1-0 WAC) by putting an end to their eight-game winning streak tonight by a final score of 2-1 at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
Only 18 minutes into the first half the Spartans had a two-goal lead against the Antelope.
Senior midfielder Willy Miranda scored in the ninth minute and junior defender Kasper Poulsgaard scored in the 17th minute.
SJSU senior forward Rudi Castro was putting the pressure on by trying to put his team ahead with shots at all angles but kept resulting in corner kicks.
From then on the ball keeps getting pushed to the middle with SJSU being strategic in their moves. Senior defenders Kameron Bolden, Miguel Bermudez and Jamal Adam kept the momentum going after their goals.
Grand Canyon began pushing the ball back over to junior goalkeeper David Sweeney, but had no luck trying to get the ball past Sweeney as he was very territorial over his goal and backed by his defenders.
It seemed as though SJSU would end the first half at 2-0. However, Grand Canyon had other ideas and made a surprising shot with only five minutes left in the first half cutting its deficit 2-1.
Redshirt fifth year midfielder Tosh Yasuda scored the goal for Grand Canyon in the 41st minute.
From then on both teams brought the heat in the second half.
The Spartans defended well but kept giving the Antelopes opportunities by giving them free kicks.
With only 16 minutes left in the game GCU kept putting pressure on the Spartans by trying to score. However, Sweeney kept stopping them in what the broadcaster described as “highlight reel stops.”
The Spartans hope to continue their four-game winning streak by going on the road against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday, October 22nd.
