WVB preview: SJSU looks to stay hot against Utah State

The San Jose State women’s volleyball team (9-4, 3-0 MW) will be taken to the test against Utah State University (10-5, 2-1 MW) on Saturday, October 2. 

The Spartans have been on a tear as of late winning five straight with their latest on Thursday, September 30 against Boise State University where SJSU won 3-2.

Senior outside hitter Haylee Nelson has continued her dominance with a team leading 155 kills averaging about 3.44 per set. 

Junior outside hitter Amethyst Harper is behind her with 143 kills on the team. 

Sophomore Mia Schafer has been the main setter for the Spartans and has a total of 415 aces.

Senior libero Sarah Smevog defensive wonders have continued with 208 digs. Nelson, along with her offensive dominance, has 113 digs. 

As for the Aggies, they recently defeated University of Nevada by a set score of 3-1.

Outside hitter sophomore Tatum Stall has been unstoppable with 163 kills. Junior middle blockers Kennedi Boyd and Kylee Stokes each have over 100 kills for Utah State.

Junior setter Kalena Vaivai leads the team with 299 kills. The setter spot also features freshman setter Beatriz Rodrigues who has 164 aces and freshman setter Kalia Thunstrom has 134 aces of her own.

Sophomore libero Abby Peterson has been solid in the defensive category with 171 digs. Vaivai is second on the team with 120 digs. 

This will in fact be a great matchup between two teams trying to keep their fires alive as the month of October comes rolling in.
