Spartans notch another top 10

Round 1

The San Jose State women’s golf team got surprising contributions in Napa, Calif.

Freshman Louisa Carlbom and sophomore Jadan Gonzalez found themselves inside the top 20 during the first round of the Silverado Showdown.

Both were tied for 13th at 1-over-par. Carlbom got her first eagle of her collegiate career on the par-5 fifth hole. She added back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. 

Gonzalez battled back after going three over on the front nine. She closed out the round with three straight birdies from 16 through 18. 

Sophomore Kajsa Arwefjall faced some troubles on the difficult Robert Trent Jones design. She started the back nine with three pars but then rode on the bogey train on holes 13 through 15. She did finish her round with back-to-back birdies to shoot a 2-over 74. She was in a tie for 21st. 

Junior Antonia Malate had a rollercoaster round in wine country. She had consecutive birdies on the second and third holes. However, she went five over on the front nine to end up posting a 3-over 75. She sat in a tie for 32nd. 

Freshman Jordyn Parr had one birdie on the scorecard then went six over the rest of the way. She shot a 5-over 77. She sat in a tie for 47th. 

SJSU posted 7-over-par 295 to tie for seventh with Oregon. UCLA shot an even par 288 to have a two shot lead over Washington.

Oregon State junior Ellie Slama and Washington freshman Stefanie Deng both fired a 5-under 67 as they took a three shot lead into the second round.

The Spartans started their second round off the first tee at 8:45 a.m.

Round 2

Sophomore Kajsa Arwefjall climbed her way inside the top 10 of the leaderboard. 

The Hollviken, Sweden native shot an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 10th at 2-over-par after two rounds at the Silverado Showdown.

It was not a highlight reel round but she managed to play smart golf. She had two birdies and two bogeys as she was looking for her fifth top 10 finish of the season.

Freshman Louisa Carlbom had a dreadful second round. She had seven bogeys on her scorecard as she plummeted down the leaderboard. She shot a 6-over-par 78 as she sits in a tie for 26th at 7-over-par.

Junior Antoina Malate had another poor round that included a double bogey on the par-4 14th hole. She posted a 5-over 77 to put herself at 8-over-par and in a tie for 31st.

Freshman Jordyn Parr continued her tower of terror at Silverado Resort. She shot a 9-over 80 which put her in a tie for 57th at 13-over-par. 

Sophomore Jadan Gonzalez had an utter collapse on day two. She shot an 87 which included a triple bogey on the 12th hole. It was a 14-shot difference between rounds. She fell all the way down to 16-over-par and in a tie for 65th

SJSU sat in eighth place at 26-over-par. UCLA continued to put its pedal to metal as they sat at 1-over-par which is four clear of rival USC.

Oregon State junior Ellie Slama fired a bogey-free 68 to break away from the pack. She now had a six shot lead at 9-under-par. Washington sophomore Stefanie Deng had a share of the lead heading into today. She shot a 3-over 75 and ended the day at 2-under-par.. She is in a tie for fourth.

The Spartans begin their final round with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Final Round

Kajsa Arwefjall is becoming a magnet for earning top-10 finishes. 

The junior continued her solid season as she shot an even par 72 to finish in a tie for eighth at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif.

Arwefjall had three bogeys on the front nine but rallied with three birdies on the back. She finished at 2-over-par for the tournament. 

Freshman Louisa Carlbom had three double bogeys in her final round to shoot a 4-over-par 76. She finished in a tie for 31st at 11-over-par.

Junior Antonia Malate ended her disappointing week with a 4-over 76. She finished in a tie for 38th at 12- over -par. She had two birdies but could not get off the bogey train with six bogeys on her scorecard.

Freshman Jordyn Parr saved her best golf for last in wine country. She shot a 1-over 73 which included two birdies and two bogeys. However, she finished in a tie for 44th at 14-over-par.

Sophomore Jadan Gonzalez will be ecstatic to get out of Silverado Resort. She shot eight shots better than her disastrous second round 87 with a final round 79. She finished in a tie for 63rd at 23-over-par. 

The Spartans finished in a tie for seventh out of 13 teams at 35- over- par. USC will be playing their fight song on the flight home to Los Angeles. 

The Trojans erased a four-shot deficit but shot a combined 7-under 281 to get their fourth win of the season. USC finished at 2-under-par which made it for a sweet six-shot victory over rival UCLA.

Oregon State junior Ellie Slama went wire to wire for her third career individual title. She just edged out USC senior Allisen Corpuz by one shot. Slama finished at 8-under-par. 

SJSU will turn its focus to the Mountain West Championship in two weeks. The Spartans will be looking for their first Mountain West title as they will fight the heat in Rancho Mirage, Calif., They will play at Mission Hills Country Club which hosts the LPGA’s first major of the season in the ANA Inspiration.

The Mountain West Championship is on April 20-21.
