Unlike the history books, the Spartans were brought down by the Trojans on Saturday.
San Jose State women’s water polo (1-7) continues its losing streak after losing 11-5 against Southern California (9-0).
Wasting no time, the Trojans took the game thanks to a goal by junior driver Grace Tehaney 23 seconds into the game.
The Spartans had several power play opportunities but all of their shot attempts were stopped by USC redshirt senior goalkeeper Holly Parker.
Meanwhile, the Trojans were not flashy and made simple plays going straight for the net and scoring quick points.
They ended the first period with a 4-goal lead 4-0.
SJSU finally got on the board 4-1 two minutes into the second half, thanks to junior utility Emma Hank shotgunning the ball into the net with assistance from senior driver Lili Urvari.
The Spartans grabbed another goal 6-2 four minutes into the second half with junior utility Clarissa Wandinger making it past the Trojans defense and sniping it over Parker.
However, it seemed every time SJSU scored one goal USC would get two more.
The Trojans led the Spartans by a massive 6-point lead all the way to the end 11-5.
Tehaney proved herself to be an overwhelming force for the Trojans by having a 100% shot percentage by scoring five goals on all five of her shot attempts.
Parker also proved to be a challenge with a 66% save percentage versus SJSU’s freshman goalkeeper Elaina Davey had a 31% save percentage.
The win is the Trojan’s ninth in a row, whilst Spartans extend their losing streak to four games.
SJSU women’s water polo will face off against USC again at 11 a.m. on Sunday in Los Angeles.
