Women’s tennis comes back against Wyoming to remain undefeated

San Jose State women’s tennis team (8-0,1-0 MW) came from behind to make it eight victories in a row to start the season against the University of Wyoming (6-5, 0-1 MW) on Friday, March 26.   

This was each team’s first Mountain West contest of the season.

The first match began with three matches of doubles. Match one consisted of senior Savannah Sendar and graduate student Tamara Culibrk from SJSU against junior Maria Oreshkina and freshman Noesjka Brink from Wyoming.

Both clubs went back and forth until the match was left unfinished with the score tied at six.

For the second doubles match, junior Alba Pedrero Galindo and sophomore Lara Marco Mas from SJSU were paired together against junior Ana Fernandez and freshman Sophie Zehender from Wyoming. 

The Spartans held a strong 4-2 lead, but the Cowgirls clawed back to tie the match at four and eventually won 6-4.

The third doubles match featured sophomore Rozalina Youseva and freshman Irena Muradyan from SJSU vs juniors Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause from Wyoming.

The Spartans also held a lead of 5-4 but eventually fell to the Cowgirls in match three 6-4.

After victorious doubles matches, Wyoming held a 1-0 lead heading into the singles.

In match one, Galindo and Oreshkina were paired up against each other. Galindo took the first and second sets 6-4 and 6-2.

Youseva challenged Zehender for match two. It was a clean sweep for Zehender who won the first set 6-4 and the second 6-2.

Muradyan faced Fernandez in the third match and was able to sweep the opposition winning the first set 6-3 and the second set 6-1. 

The fourth match presented Marco Mas and Noesjka. It was a two-set sweep by Noesjka winning 6-2 and 6-4.   

Match five had freshmen Raquel Villan Pereira pinned against Lucia Malinak.

Match six featured freshmen Jovana Babic and Kaftanova. The rookie Babic displayed dominance sweeping Kaftanova 6-4 and 6-2.

The Spartans came from behind after losing the doubles match and now are 8-0 heading into Sunday, March 28th’s matchup against Colorado State University at the Spartan tennis complex.
