Tennis: Spartans continue their undefeated start to the season with a win over Santa Clara

By Don Le — Reporter

San Jose State women’s tennis remains undefeated with a tough 4-3 win Saturday over the Santa Clara Broncos.

For the first time this season, SJSU (4-0) did not win the doubles point.

Senior Savannah Sendar and sophomore Rozalina Youseva lost their set 6-3, but Irena Muradyan and Raquel Villan Pereira won 6-4 to tie the doubles at 1-1.

The third and final doubles match determined who would win the doubles point.

Junior Alba Pedrero Galindo and sophomore Lara Marco Mas faced freshman JennaMarie Gordon and sophomore Giulia Hayer in a nail-biter of a game that went to a tiebreaker, but they fell to the Broncos 63-77

Down a point for the first time this season, the Spartans needed four out of six victories to claim victory.

It was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams singles’ players as freshman Irena Muradyan won her match 6-3, 6-1.

SCU answered back with freshman Finley Kalinic taking her match against Sendar 6-4, 6-3.

With SJSU now down 2-1 and their backs were against the wall, they needed some big wins from their players. The Spartans did not disappoint.

Freshman Jovana Babic took her set 6-2, 6-3 and Marco Mas followed with 6-2, 7-5.

The Spartans were back in the driver’s seat being up 3-2, but it was not over yet.

Pedrero Galindo appeared set to win her match against SCU junior Jamie Schroer with two set wins of 7-6 (7-1) and 6-5.

Alas she had to retire due to injury, tying the match at 3-3.

It all came down to this final singles’ match between Youseva and SCU’s Gordon.

Man, what a game it was.

Youseva took the first set in a brutally long tiebreaker win of 79-67.

Gordon took the second set 7-5.

Finally, Youseva smashed her final set to win 6-4 and secured the win for SJSU.

After two hard-fought days of tennis, the Spartans claimed their fourth straight win.

The Spartans will look to keep this strong start going on the road against UC Davis on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
