San Jose State women’s basketball has canceled the remainder of its 2020-21 schedule because of COVID-19 concerns, the team announced today.

The Spartans have had nine of their first 13 scheduled games canceled or postponed for virus related reasons including two pauses of team activities.

“This was an incredibly tough decision, but one that is in the best interest of the health and safety for our program’s student-athletes, coaches and staff,” SJSU AD Marie Tuite said in the announcement. “San Jose State will maintain its current schedule of competition in other sports while continuing to implement the athletic department’s health and safety protocols.”

The quarantining and isolating members of the program will stay in Phoenix until completion, according to the announcement.

The rest of the team will return to San Jose from Phoenix — where it has been since Santa Clara County restricted contact sports in later November — and quarantine upon arrival.

NCAA rules for the 2020-21 season will give the team another year of eligibility as a result of COVID-19.

The Spartans were 2-2 this season including a win against PAC-12 UC Berkeley. The team was looking to build on a historic 2019-20 season, but will now have to wait another year to do so.
