Walker Climbing Up The Record Books

By Candace Farmer — Reporter

San Jose State wide receiver Tre Walker is a target to keep an eye on this season. Entering his fourth season with the Spartans, the senior has already made history.

With 148 receptions, the Compton, Calif., native is now number eight on the all-time receptions list in the history of Spartan football.

The Spartans kicked off their first game in the Mountain West Conference on Oct. 24 at CEFCU Stadium with a 17-6 victory over Air Force. This is the first-ever league win for SJSU against Air Force since joining the Mountain West Conference in 2013.

“I was just so proud of our team, I thought they played extremely hard,” said head coach Brent Brennan in a press conference Monday.

This was a strong and encouraging start to the beginning of the season, despite the uncertainty of college sports amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

As for Walker, he caught four passes for 38 yards for the Spartans opening night against Air Force, 14 yards his longest reception.

He’ll look to surpass three Spartan football alumni including Guy Liggins (149), Jabari Carr (150) and Tim Crawley (151) in receptions on Saturday against New Mexico.

From the start of his career as a Spartan, Walker has been incredibly impressive on the field. In his 2019 season, Walker had 79 receptions with 1,161 yards and two touchdowns.

Walker formed great chemistry on the field with former Spartan quarterback Josh Love, who was named the Mountain West’s offensive player of the year in 2019. Walker and five other Spartan football team members joined Love as All-Mountain West nominees the same year.

The senior communications major received congratulations and words of encouragement from fellow Spartan football alumni on Twitter.

“I stay getting passed up. @CoachBrennan I think I have a year of eligibility left. I just want one catch a game. @BambinoTre keep climbing,” said Jabari Carr via Twitter.

With the game against New Mexico being moved to CEFCU Stadium following a surplus of coronavirus cases in the New Mexico area, Walker will now have the home field advantage to move up the ranks from number eight to five in Spartan pass receiving history.
