San Jose State women’s basketball guard Megan Anderson has transferred to UCSB, the Gaucho’s athletics department announced Friday.
The junior departs on the back of a productive season, finishing second in the Mountain West in three-point percentage (40.4) behind teammate Ayzhiana Basallo.
She joins a UCSB squad that finished third in the Big West Conference last season. The Gauchos finished 9-7 in conference play and 14-15 overall.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity, and I cannot wait to be a Gaucho! I’m looking forward to this new chapter,” Anderson said in UCSB’s announcement.
The sharpshooter will sit out a year before competing in her final year of eligibility, as NCAA transfer rules state.
SJSU will have quite a few candidates vying for Anderson’s starting job — including Autam Mendez, a newly-signed transfer from North Iowa Area Community College.
The guard won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Player of the Year award last season, scoring nearly 17 points per game.
Anderson started 76 of her 92 career games as a Spartan, including every game for the last two seasons. Her 188 career three-pointers were the most of any Spartan during her time in San Jose.
This will be the first time in nearly a decade that Anderson and fellow guard Danae Marquez won’t be teammates. Playing at Fresno’s Clovis West High School, the duo won four straight Valley Championships and a California Interscholastic Federation state title as Golden Eagles.
The Spear reached out to Anderson, but did not receive a response.
