The San Jose State baseball team had a sugglish day at the plate Tuesday, ending in a 4-2 road loss to St. Mary’s.
While the team did collect eight hits in the game, they also left eight runners on base.
You have to score those runners if you want to win baseball games. Senior catcher Johnny Mendoza was the only Spartan to have a multi-hit day, while Dalton Bowling and Robert Hamchuk were able to add an RBI to their stats.
The pitching for the Spartans had its rough patches all game. While starting pitcher Ben Polack would only pitch two innings, he gave up two earned runs to put the Spartans in a hole early.
Luckily for them, Dominic Eberle would come in for relief. He pitched three solid frames of one-hit baseball, keeping SJSU in it.
However, Wesley Clawson relieved Eberle and chalked himself the loss.
The team is going to have to figure out how to score late in games. It was the second game in a row where they couldn’t score after the fifth inning.
If the Spartans continue to have problems at the plate, then they don’t stand a chance against Mountain West competition later in the season.
While the road loss does hurt, the team can’t dwell on it for too long, as it welcomes Loyola Marymount University to San Jose Friday.
