San Jose State volleyball (7-14, 2-8 MW) lost in three hard-fought sets to the second-best team in the Mountain West, Wyoming (14-7, 9-1 MW).
The Spartan offense showcased its talents by tallying a total of 40 kills, barely trailing behind the Cowgirls’ 46.
In the first set, the Spartans held the lead for the majority of the time. Redshirt senior Fernanda Vido carried the Spartan offense with 15 kills and 2 aces, 9 of those kills coming from the first set.
SJSU had set point at 24-23 and 26-25 but were unable to connect the dots to attain the final point necessary to end the set. The Cowgirls ended up winning the set 29-27.
The second set easily went to Wyoming as the Spartans had a hitting average of -.031. The Cowgirls took an early lead and finished out the set with the 25-15 win.
In the final set, the Spartans fought hard to earn a spot back into the match. Vido’s back-to-back service aces gave SJSU the starting momentum to success. However, the Cowgirls went on a 7-0 run that proved to be unstoppable as they took the set at 25-19.
The Spartan defense was carried by sophomore Sarah Smevog who tallied up 14 digs followed by Vido with 9 digs, but their efforts were not enough to halt the Cowgirls’ offensive powers.
SJSU will head back to San Jose Thursday to start a three-game homestand against Boise State at 6 p.m.
