San Jose State track and field participated in its last meet before the Mountain West Outdoor Championship. The team was local as it competed in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, hosted by UC Berkeley.
The men really showed out this weekend, especially Edgar Bonilla.
The junior took first place in the 800-meter run. He finished on top out of 19 competitors, beating the second place finisher by less than 0.3 seconds.
Another first place victory went to freshman Luis Chavez in the 1500-meter run. Chavez was the only Spartan runner in the event and came out on top with a time of 3:56.91.
The other male competitors did fairly well with junior Evaristo Mateo taking third in the 5000 meter and freshman Michael Harris taking third in the 100-meter dash.
The women seemed to have a harder time ar the meet.
It was no shock that junior thrower Silvia Gutierrez was able to stay competitive, throwing 50.74 meter to finish fourth in the hammer throw. The first place finisher from Cal dominated the division with a distance of 64.48 meters.
Freshman Alicia Johnson did manage to take eighth out of 15 competitors in the 100 meter dash and was only a second behind the second place finisher from Cal.
On day two of the meet, junior Diamond Tabron finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.34.
Freshman Mikayla Akers did come out with a third place finish in 1500-meter run. Another Spartan hit the podium in the pole vault event as freshman Eseta Finau took third with 3.60 meters.
Overall, Berkeley proved to be a tough competitor as it took most of the events.
The Spartans have a little less than two weeks before the Mountain West Championship, which will conclude the season. It starts on Wednesday, May 8 in Fresno.
