San Jose State women’s water polo (9-11, 1-2 MPSF) swept its Saturday matches, but failed to leave undefeated after Sunday’s match and finished 2-1 in the ASU Invitational.
Saturday brought a doubleheader victory as the Spartans defeated conference opponent Arizona State (12-9, 1-2 MPSF) 9-7 and Siena College (7-17) 17-6.
The first match against No. 9 ASU was a huge win for No. 19 SJSU. Both teams were putting up a tough fight throughout the entire match.
The first half ended with a tied game 2-2 but the Spartans were just warming up as they scored five goals in the third quarter.
Sun Devils goalkeeper Bridget Johnson was working hard in the net as she recorded 10 saves, but the Spartans kept getting past her.
Junior Sierra Painter led the Spartans with three goals as freshman Matilda Moore and sophomore Tyanna Supreme netted two goals each.
This huge victory gave the Spartans momentum going into their second match of the day against Siena.
They didn’t seem to struggle at all within the match as they had a seven-goal lead heading into the last quarter. The team put up five more goals before the end of the match.
Freshmen utilities Clarissa Wandinger and Olga Descalzi Portell led SJSU with three goals apiece.
The final match on Sunday brought up another non-conference matchup against No. 21 San Diego State.
The Spartans would not get to go home early as the match went into four overtimes.
It was a constant back-and-forth match, but with less than two minutes left, SDSU tied it up to send both teams into the first overtime.
The Aztecs scored a goal within 30 seconds of the fourth overtime to defeat the Spartans 10-9.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Henry had a phenomenal performance of 13 saves as Supreme led the Spartans with three goals.
