San Jose State baseball (14-13, 8-4 MW) lost the second game of a three-game series to Northwestern University (9-13) 6-5 behind hot hitting from the Wildcats.
Senior infielder Jack Dunn and junior infielder Alex Erro were both on fire offensively. Both players went 4-for-5 with Dunn contributing 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
SJSU tacked on first in the opening frame. Sophomore outfielder Jack Colette singled in Connor Konishi to make it 1-0.
NU quickly responded as Dunn scored as freshman infielder Shawn Goosenberg reached on a fielder’s choice. It took the 2-1 lead in the third inning as Goosenberg scored Dunn on an RBI single.
The Spartans had a 4-2 lead after the fifth inning behind a three-run homer from junior outfielder Kellen Strahm. He now has a team-high 3 HRs.
An RBI single from senior infielder Aaron Pleschner in the sixth gave SJSU an extra insurance run to make it 5-2.
The bottom half of the inning was when the Wildcats went on a run to tie the game.
Behind a few wild pitches, walks and a 2-RBI single from Dunn, the team strung together three runs and made it 5-5.
After two scoreless innings, Northwestern secured the game after senior infielder Willie Bourbon drew a bases loaded walk from senior closer Fineas Del Bonta-Smith. In anticlimactic fashion, the Wildcats walked in their sixth run and the game ended 6-5.
Konishi went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and Pleschner went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman starter Jonathan Clark pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 4 runs on 8 hits. Sophomore Wesley Clawson was credited with the loss as he allowed the tying and winning run to score.
The Spartans will look to avoid the sweep Sunday at 10 a.m. at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
