With conference tournament seeding at stake, the San Jose State Women’s basketball team faces as close to a must-win situation as it has seen all year.
Sitting at the tentative No. 10 seed for the Mountain West Basketball Championship, the Spartans (4-22, 3-12 MW) have a chance to close a two-game gap between themselves and San Diego State. They host the Aztecs at the Event Center on Saturday afternoon.
Taking on the Spartans for the first time this season, SDSU comes to San Jose with a 10-16 overall record after going 5-10 in conference play this year.
Having lost six of their seven road conference games, the Aztecs will also look to avoid increasing their losing streak to five after dumping their last four contests.
SJSU and SDSU will matchup for the second time this season. In their last meeting on Feb. 2, the Aztecs handed the Spartans a 69-68 defeat.
After Spartans guard Analyss Benally knocked down a three-pointer with 16 seconds left in the game to pull SJSU ahead, 68-67, San Diego State would nail a game-winning floater two seconds shy of the final buzzer.
In an opportunity to rectify that loss, the Spartans can also pull themselves within one game of the Aztecs, who would currently be seeded at No. 8 if the season ended today.
Coming off of a 110-72 loss at New Mexico, the Spartans can win three of their last four games after beating Colorado State and Air Force last week.
SJSU and SDSU will tip off at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Event Center.
