San Jose State beach volleyball (4-3) had a busy weekend as it split its Thursday matches and went 3-3 in the Emerald Beach Hotel Classic.

SJSU faced Texas A&M-Kingsville (2-4) for its first match in Texas and it put up quite a fight getting a 3-2 victory. Freshman Tabea Schwarz and junior Caitlin Bettenay were the first pair to finish in two sets.

The Javelinas secured the next two points to take the lead — however, the Spartans responded by claiming the last two points for the win.

In the second match of the day, senior Julia Goldbeck and freshman Sarah Smevog got the only SJSU point in the team’s 4-1 loss against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-1).

The first match of the Classic on Friday was against Missouri Baptist University (0-4), which resulted in an SJSU sweep. Only one Spartans pair went into three sets, whereas the rest of the team got the point in two.

Following that, the Spartans had a much better showing against the Javelinas as they finished 4-1. Schwarz and Bettenay and Goldbeck and Smevog swept the Javelinas in both Thursday and Friday.

The final day of the tournament was rough as SJSU fell 3-2 to Houston Baptist University (2-1). Seniors Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrade swept their match and Goldbeck and Smevog got the other Spartan victory.

The final opponent of the weekend was the University of Louisiana at Monroe (7-1), where the Spartans proved to be tired and were defeated 4-1. Golbeck and Smevog continued their dominance with the only point.

SJSU got swept in only eight matches out of the 30 it played.

The Spartans travel to Sacramento State and take on the Hornets Friday at 2 p.m.
