Jenessa Ullegue threw a complete-game shutout as San Jose State softball (9-5) swept the Silicon Valley Classic with a 6-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield.
The freshman right-hander only surrendered four hits and struck out five against the Roadrunners (5-7).
“My curveball was really helping me today,” she said. “I’ve been kind of struggling location wise, but today, it all came together.”
Junior outfielder Makayla Englestad got the Spartans on the scoreboard first with an RBI groundout in the third inning.
The scoring didn’t stop as freshman and senior infielders Arianna Miranda and Madison Aurin drove in a pair of runs on two singles.
“I thought this was the best game we’ve played all year,” said head coach Peter Turner. “They played exceptionally well and looked very crisp.”
SJSU added some insurance with three more runs in the last two innings. In the fifth, freshman Carley Morfey came in to pinch-hit and drew the bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.
Englestad recorded her second RBI of the day with a triple in the sixth and later scored the sixth run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Miranda.
Ullegue improved to 3-1 on the year as the Spartans won their fourth consecutive game.
“I feel like we really needed it because we’ve been having up and down games,” Englestad said. “I’m glad we were able to pull through for every game in this tournament.”
SJSU continues tourney play next week in the San Diego Classic.
