San Jose State softball (1-0) scored five unanswered runs in the last two innings to get its first win of the season over Southern Louisiana University (0-1), 6-2.
Junior outfielder Makayla Englestad put up three of the runs for SJSU, while Kaelin Amrein and senior infielder Madison Aurin recorded two RBIs apiece.
In the top of the first, Englestad got on base from a hit-by-pitch and Aurin’s single to right field drove her in for the first run of the game. SJSU was able to get out of the bottom half of the inning by holding the bases loaded to keep the 1-0 lead.
The Lions found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman infielder Briahna Bennett hit a sacrifice fly with loaded the bases to SJSU’s Arianna Miranda to tie the game 1-1.
With runners at the corners for SLU, junior infielder Georgia Blair threw out redshirt-freshman outfielder Pryscilla Prince at the plate, which saved SJSU from giving up another run.
The momentum continued for the Lions as they took the lead in the fifth inning. Sophomore catcher Ella Manzer doubled to center and scored senior infielder Rebecca Skains to make it 2-1.
In the top of the sixth, Amrein doubled to right and scored Engelstad to tie the game at two. She scored later in the inning to make it 3-2 when Miranda reached base safely after an error from sophomore infielder Madison Watson.
SJSU had bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh inning. A walk to Amrein got another run on the board for SJSU that made it a two-run game.
The Spartans were able to put up two more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 6-2.
Despite SLU making some noise in the bottom half of the inning, it was not able to redeem themselves.
SJSU will stay in Louisiana and compete the Lion Classic I with Northern Illinois University and Mississippi Valley State on Friday. First pitches are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
