SJSU wins four straight singles to secure win over Cal Poly, 5-2

After seeing itself down 2-1, San Jose State women’s tennis (2-0) won the last four singles matches to secure another non-conference victory against Cal Poly (0-2), 5-2.

The Spartans came out strong by clinching the doubles point 2-1. Sophomore pair Laura Malsert and Savannah Sendar defeated CP’s Kimberley Bhunu and Emily Louie-Meadors 6-1.

Senior Miyo Kobayashi and freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo endured a back-and-forth battle with Caroline Williams and MacKenzie Worsnop as it came down to a tiebreaker. They secured the point for SJSU by winning 7-6 (9-7).

The Mustangs responded by taking the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Louie-Meadors defeated Pedrero Galindo in two sets (6-0, 6-3).

Kobayashi won the second set in her match, but fell to Bhunu in a tiebreaker (4-6, 7-5, 0-1 [10-7]).

SJSU bounced back and claimed its second win of the season by taking the next and last four singles matches.

Sendar also experienced a tough match, but eventually defeated Grace Olyphant 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3). Malsert followed by beating Worsnop in two sets.

Sophomore Klara Milojkovic clinched the win for San Jose State as she defeated Williams in three sets.

The Spartans take their undefeated record on the road and face UC Riverside on Saturday and Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Feb. 3.
