After blowing a 3-1 lead in the third period, the San Jose Sharks came out victorious against the Minnesota Wild 4-3 thanks to Barclay Goodrow’s game-winning goal.
Goodrow broke the 3-3 tie at 7:25 in the final period as he redirected a booming shot from Brent Burns.
“Whenever he gets it, I just try to get to the net,” Goodrow told NHL’s Eric Gilmore in a postgame interview. “The puck’s going to go there. I was just able to get a stick on it and I found a way.”
The Sharks (8-4-3) tacked on early at 4:47 in the first period. Burns made a beautiful pass to Marcus Sorensen, who then deposited his second goal of the season into a wide open net.
Joe Thornton gave San Jose a 2-0 lead with his 399th career goal at 5:36 in the second period. The goal was initially credited to Sorensen, but as Jumbo Joe cruised in front of the net, he managed deflect the puck past Devan Dubnyk.
“It’s an honor to play with him,” Sorensen told the Associated Press in a postgame interview. “It was fun playing with him. He was good. He was great. He made some great plays and he scored a goal.”
The Wild (8-4-2) cut the deficit at 12:56 as Zach Parise netted a power-play goal past Martin Jones.
However, Antti Suomela made it 3-1 Sharks at 17:08. Sorensen’s pass allowed Suomela to push for a centerline drive, to which he placed the puck top-shelf off the backhand.
On that play, Sorensen recorded his first-career three-point game.
Momentum shifted from the Sharks to the Wild in the third period. Jared Spurgeon opened up the third with an unassisted goal at 1:22.
Shortly after that, Matt Dumba tied the game 3-3 at 3:27.
Goodrow clinched the game for the Sharks with his GWG at 7:25 in the third period.
“Obviously the beginning of the third period didn’t go the way we wanted but I felt like we didn’t take a step back,” Goodrow told NHL’s Eric Gilmore in a postgame interview. “We kind of pushed the pace a little once it was tied up. It was nice to get that fourth goal and hang on to win.”
Jones recorded 23 saves for his sixth win in seven games.
“I thought all the guys got going tonight,” head coach Peter DeBoer told the Associated Press in a postgame interview. “Antti got us a goal, Goody got us a goal, Sorensen got us a goal. I thought all those guys were real good. I thought Joe Thornton was real good tonight. The whole depth of our lineup I thought was very good.”
The Sharks begin a short two-game road trip with the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
