Still clinging to the No. 20 rank in men’s water polo, San Jose State (6-16, 0-4 GCC) fell in a pair of Gold Coast Conference matches over the weekend.
The team is still winless in conference play with only one regular season match remaining.
On Saturday, the Spartans hosted No. 7 Pepperdine. They got off to a good start and held a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, but things quickly unraveled as the Waves rallied to take a 7-6 lead at the half.
The Waves kept the momentum in the second half, never letting the Spartans regain the lead. Pepperdine held on to win 13-11.
A few of the Spartan drivers stood out. Junior Mark Weber and senior Cade Baldridge each scored hat-tricks for the Spartans, while freshman Adam Bado contributed two goals in the effort.
On Sunday, it was more of the same when SJSU took on No. 8 Long Beach State.
The Spartans allowed LBSU to take an early lead, one that it would not give away. After leading 6-4 at the half, the Beach outscored the Spartans 5-4 in the second and sealed an 11-8 victory.
The Spartans will look to avoid a winless conference schedule when they travel to Stockton to take on University of Pacific on Saturday at 12 p.m.
