San Jose State men’s soccer came up short of a Western Athletic Conference tournament berth as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley clinched a 2-1 victory on Sunday.
The Spartans (7-8-2, 5-4-1 WAC) allowed two quick goals in the first half that proved to be enough for the Vaqueros (12-5, 7-3 WAC).
At 1:14, UTRGV’s leading scorer, junior forward Kyle Edwards, scored his 11th goal of the season and quickly put his team up 1-0.
Junior forward William Akio extended the Vaqueros’ lead to two with a goal at 7:19. Senior Rooby Dalusma was credited with the assist.
SJSU received its first and only goal of the game at 12:39 due to a mistake from UTRGV.
The team outshot the Vaqueros 16-11, but could not get one passed redshirt-junior goalkeeper Andy Rios, who recorded two saves.
Sophomore midfielders Willy Miranda and Danny Sanchez led the Spartans with three shots a piece. Sanchez also had one of the two shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Clewis was credited with seven saves and increased his conference-leading record to 81 saves.
The Spartans will conclude conference play against Seattle University at Spartan Soccer Field on Friday.
