After starting the final round five shots back of the leader, San Jose State’s senior golfer Abegail Arevalo displayed an epic comeback and took first place in the Coeur d’Alene Collegiate Invitational.
Arevalo sunk three late birdies to clinch the second individual title of her collegiate career. She finished the tournament at two-under par with 211 strokes.
As a team, the Spartans placed second at five-over par with a total of 857 strokes. The team had a total score of 290 in the first round, 288 in the second, and 279 in the third.
SJSU women’s golf has claimed the individual title and placed in the top-3 in its first two invitationals of the season.
The Spartans were five shots behind University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who finished even with a total score of 852 in the tournament. They had a score of 282 in the first round, 278 in the second, and 292 in the third.
Heading into Round 3, there were five other schools within two shots of SJSU in the standings. The Spartans held on, continued to drop strokes in the third round and prevented any of them from catching up.
The next time the Spartans tee off will be at the Illinois Women’s Invitational next month.
