The winless drought finally came to an end for San Jose State women’s soccer on Sunday after freshman defender Hannah Mathews knocked in the winning goal in double overtime against U.C. Davis.
This was the first time since 2014 that the two teams met in a match.
The Spartans (1-3-2) dominated with ball control all throughout the game. They put pressure on the Aggies (3-4-1) by outshooting them nine to two.
“We changed our offense a couple of times, but our main goal is to keep possession,” Mathews said.
At the 108th minute, sophomore Gabriella Hurtado attempted the 12th corner kick of the day for SJSU. Just like the others, it was deflected away from the goal.
Freshman mid-forward Hannah Hall played back, had the assist kicking the ball near the goalie box and set up the wide open shot for Mathews.
“That was a great feeling, I can’t stop smiling”, Mathews said. “Not only for me but for this team.”
The 12 corner kicks are a season high for SJSU, with five happening in the second overtime.
What can not be lost in the win is the impressive work done by the defense.
UC Davis only had two shots on goal the entire game, with the first one in the 70th minute.
“The back line and mid-field pretty much held it down for us,” said senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau.
SJSU will look to build momentum off its win with a matchup on the road against UC Riverside on Friday.
