Sophomore midfielder Willy Miranda scored two goals, including the game winner, to lead San Jose State men’s soccer to a 4-1 victory over No. 16 University of San Francisco.
The Spartans (2-3-1) clinched their first regular-season win against a top-25 team since 2009.
“We were more ruthless in front of the goal than we have been in the past,” head coach Simon Tobin told SJSU Athletics. “I have a very nice team this year, and I’m glad the score displayed that dominance this time.”
Sophomore midfielder Kalei Tolentino-Perry scored his first goal of the season at 13:13 and gave SJSU an early 1-0 lead.
The Dons (2-2-1) responded less than two minutes later with a goal from senior defender Noah Leong.
In the 35th minute, Miranda scored his first goal of the game and put the Spartans back on top 2-1 heading into halftime.
“Willy is a special player,” Tobin told SJSU Athletics. “He played in a little bit of a different position early on, but he can play anywhere.”
Sophomore defender Omar Lemus scored his third goal on the year and made it 3-1 SJSU at 65:12.
Miranda added an insurance goal, and his second of the game, late in the 82nd minute to secure the 4-1 victory over USF. Both Miranda and Lemus are now the top goal scorers with three apiece.
The Spartans will conclude their two-game homestand against the Pacific Tigers on Sunday.
