An astonishing start to the season for San Jose State women’s golf team as it travels back home with a first-place title at the Minnesota Invitational.
The Spartans as a team finished 12 shots better than Virginia Tech, the second-place finisher and were the only team to finish under par with a -4.
True freshman Natasha Andrea Oon went all out for her 17th birthday by finishing first in the entire tournament at -9. Being one of the youngest members on the team clearly put no pressure on Oon.
Oon managed to only shoot one bogie in the first round and three in the second. She wasn’t the only top-scoring Spartan as three members finished Day 1 in the top 20.
Day 1 consisted of two rounds in which the Spartans took the lead both times. The lowest score for the team was only six shots over par.
With a team effort, the Spartans finished Day 1 with a total of 35 birdies.
In round two only two Spartans finished above par by 2 shots.
The Spartans were in first place by one shot going into the third round.
On Sunday the Spartans totaled a score of 291 tying with Louisville and the University of Kansas for the round.
Saturday’s rounds is what secured the champion placement for the Spartans.
An amazing start like this will be able to initiate the momentum the team needs for the season.
The Spartans have two weeks before their next tournament in Idaho on September 24.
