San Jose State University 2018 graduate Sybille Gauvain will officially represent the hosting Spartans in the upcoming Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.
The classic will take place in the new Spartan Tennis Complex on South Campus and will run from July 30 to Aug. 5.
“I’m getting ready for this. I’m practicing harder. I’m thinking about it when I’m practicing,” Gauvain said to SJSU Athletics. “It’s going to be like a Grand Slam tournament with all the players who are going to be here.
“The recent graduate will be one of 16 singles players competing for one of four spots in the singles main draw.
Gauvain’s qualifying round will start on July 28 where she must be one of eight winners. Her chance to play in the Classic will be decided on July 29 if she is one of four qualifiers.
The french athlete was the four-time No.1 singles player on SJSU’s women’s tennis team.
Gauvain is going up against ranked players from all over the world. The qualifying rounds will be host to ranked players from 11 countries this year.
Participants who have already announced participation include 23-time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams, her sister Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Madison Keyes.
The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic is the first of five tournaments that lead up to the U.S. Open in September.
