After 25 seasons with San Jose State’s women’s gymnastics program, head coach Wayne Wright is retiring, as announced by athletic director Marie Tuite on Thursday.
The 2012 NCAA West Regional Coach of the Year spent 17 seasons as the head coach and eight as an assistant.
Wright led his teams to many program achievements — most recently being the 2017 and 2018 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) championship titles.
“To the many student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters I got to know along the way — you all made my time here nothing but amazing,” Wright said to SJSU Athletics.
“I wish nothing but the best for the program, the student-athletes and the next staff. San José State Gymnastics will always hold a special place in my heart.”
In addition, the university won three (2004, 2017, 2018) MPSF championship titles and made seven appearances in the NCAA Regional Championships during Wright’s tenure.
He also led his gymnasts to break every team and individual school records since 2004.
“We want to congratulate Wayne for his team’s’ accomplishments and achievements at San Jose State, first as an assistant coach and later as our head coach,” Tuite said to SJSU Athletics. “We wish Wayne all the best in his future endeavors.”
A countrywide search for the new women’s gymnastics head coach is underway.
