San Jose State’s women’s water polo fell 16-4 to No. 3 Stanford for its first match in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship on Friday.

Stanford choked the opportunity to score on its first possession of the match giving SJSU the confidence it needed.

The Spartans took advantage of their first possession by scoring, taking the lead right away.

Three minutes in, junior Guara Garcia Delgado netted the ball on a power play, creating the largest lead the Spartans would see the rest of the match.

Not long after, Stanford started to pick up the pace by scoring its first goal with two minutes left in the first quarter.

That one goal for Stanford was all it took to get its momentum going as it scored two more goals before before the end of the period.

Stanford dominated the second period. Goal after goal, the Cardinal went on to score five more times, winning the pace game and the possession game.

The Spartans were incapable of keeping up with the nationally-ranked team as its defense lacked.

To make it 11-3 after three frames, freshman Natalie Hosmer netted the five-meter penalty shot with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter would be just as tough for the Spartans.

SJSU suffered its first defeat of the championship by 12 points.

The Spartans go on to play two matches tomorrow against UCLA and Arizona State.
