Madison Aurin’s one-run complete game paved the way for San Jose State softball’s 3-1 win over New Mexico.

The junior right-hander was the first to ever pitch on the Spartan Softball Field.

The Spartans’ (28-15, 12-6 MW) 98-game road trip ended Friday afternoon as they snagged their first win on their own home turf against the Lobos (12-33, 5-11 MW).

“It was nice to walk out of our clubhouse right there and on to our new field,” said junior catcher Alyssa Avila. “

Senior center fielder Brittany Abacherli broke in the bases with a singled to center after a leadoff single. She scored the first run of the afternoon for either team with no outs in the first.

In the second inning, senior shortstop Emma Entzminger grounded into a fielder’s choice, but in a bizarre circumstance stole second base right after she made it to first without the Lobos realizing.

“That’s something that I look for all of the time,” Entzminger said. “The moment they dart from the base I just go.”

Neither team would get any more runs on the board until junior second baseman Cassidy Clark singled up the middle with the bases loaded, giving SJSU a 3-0 lead.

Aurin (13-11) pitched her 11th complete game of the season and picked up her 13th win.

The junior was pitching a two-hit shutout until the top of the seventh inning when Lobo freshman catcher Sydney Broderick singled up the middle to score the team’s only run of the afternoon.

“I thought she did a good job,” said head coach Peter Turner. “I thought Calvin (the home-plate umpire) was a little tight behind the plate and I thought Madison let it get to her.”

The Spartans look to take the second game of the series tomorrow back on South Campus at noon.
