With a first round bye as the No. 3 seed in the Mountain West Championships, San Jose State women’s tennis will face No. 6 Boise State Friday evening at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise.
The Spartans, who finished the regular season 12-8, are coming in as the three seed for their second year in a row.
“Maybe it’s a good luck seeding. We’ll see,” head coach Chad Skorupka said to SJSU Athletics.
The No. 6 seed Boise State Broncos (13-7) beat Colorado State in the first round on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals against the Spartans.
Players to keep an eye on are senior Sybille Gauvain and freshman Savannah Sendar.
Gauvain has been primarily in the No. 1 position for doubles and singles this season, and Sendar has the top singles record at 12-3.
Gauvain and Sendar make a strong No. 1 doubles pair to put the Spartans at an advantage in the MW Championships for the doubles point.
In singles, charging the net for volleys, overheads and slices may be what it takes to give them an advantage over the other teams.
If the Spartans win the quarterfinal round, they will advance to the semifinal round Saturday and take on No. 2 Fresno State or No. 10 Utah State.
First serve will begin at 5 p.m.
