Women’s track and field broke records and placed high at the Cardinal Classic in Stanford.

The heavy-loaded week ended with the Spartan sprinters and jumpers competing against some of the top teams in the nation.

The two-day meet started out with freshman Lovenie Dantes taking eighth place in the 200 meter. Sophomore Brett Carter was the other SJSU competitor in the event, finishing in 16th.

Sophomore Diamond Tabron took eighth place in the 400-meter hurdles as the only Spartans representative in the event.

The Spartans then quickly transitioned to their stronger events starting with the high jump. Junior Natalie Gutierrez finished in seventh with junior Ashley Sidhu finishing .1 seconds behind her in ninth.

The final event on Friday was the Spartans’ shining moment with the long jump.

Sophomore Destiny Longmire beat her previous long jump school record by .05 meters finishing in first with a distance of 6.20 meters.

The team entered five jumpers in the event, all of which finished in the top 10. Junior Kolbi Sims finished in fourth, senior Cambree Harbaugh in fifth, junior Brittany Brown in sixth and senior Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw in eighth.

Saturday started out with the triple jump. Brow was SJSU’s top finisher in fourth place.

Harbaugh did not have her best performance in this event as she took seventh with a distance of 11.56 meters. She had previously jumped 12.33 meters at the Mountain West Challenge.

Brown came in third place in the 100-meter hurdles by a nail biting .001 seconds slower than the second place finisher from Colorado. Sims was right behind in fourth with sophomore Jayla Williams in sixth.

Dantes represented the team in the 400-meter dash, where she finished second in her section with a time of 56.61 seconds.

It was uncomparable in the finals as Stanford dominated the event taking first through fifth-place titles. Dantes finished the finals in 13th.

The 100-meter dash proved to be a tough event as all 10 competitors were within a .8 second difference. Senior Madiha Raza finished in seventh with a time of 12.60.

The Spartans did not participate in team scoring during this meet due to being split up from the distance runners competing at the Mt. SAC relays.

The team will head down to rival territory next Saturday to compete in the Fresno State Invitational.
