Quakes score two goals late, but fall to Orlando

The San Jose Earthquakes weren’t able to overcome a cold start as they lost to Orlando City SC 3-2 Saturday in the Sunshine State.

Midfielder Florian Jungwirth scored twice, both on corners for San Jose, (1-3-2) but it wasn’t enough to withstand Orlando City’s (4-2-1) offense.

Before Jungwirth’s goals, which both came in the second half, Orlando City had already scored twice in the opening half — including one in the second minute.

Chris Mueller gave Orlando City the early lead, which was his third-consecutive match scoring a goal. Mueller also assisted to Orlando’s Sacha Kljestan for the second goal of the game in the 35th minute making the score 2-0.

The Earthquakes didn’t produce many chances during the first 45 minutes. Danny Hoesen was the the closest when a shot attempt hit the bar a minute after Orlando’s second goal.

In the second half, while the Earthquakes were looking for a reduction, Orlando’s Dom Dwyer was left alone with San Jose’s goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell. Dwyer, who now has scored in four-consecutive matches, made no mistakes, giving Orlando a 3-0 lead.

It took until the 78th minute for the Quakes to mount a comeback.

The second goal, however, came during stoppage time. It was Jungwirth again on a corner kick from Magnus Eriksson, as he was able to put his head on the ball to cut the deficit to a goal. But by then, it was too late.

Orlando took its fourth straight win while leaving the Earthquakes winless since the season opener.

Next up for the ‘Quakes will be Columbus Crew SC next Saturday.
