Spartans lose ugly, 19-3

San Jose State baseball’s pitching was clobbered in a 19-3 loss at Air Force Saturday, the team’s worst loss of the season.

The Spartans (10-16, MW 3-8) allowed 11 walks and seven extra-base hits to the Falcons (11-15, MW 5-7) on their way to their ninth road loss of the season.

Senior first baseman Shane Timmons got the Spartans on board early in the top of the first with his third home run of the season.

He now has 22 home runs in his collegiate career and is tied for third on SJSU’s all-time leaderboard. Timmons is just five away from passing No. 1 John Fagan.

In the home half of the first, Air Force smacked three doubles and a single into the outfield to make the score 4-1.

Sophomore Josh Zanger (1-2) made his second start of the season for the Spartans and could only go one inning after allowing six runs and six walks. He was relieved by senior Cameron Keup.

SJSU scored one run in the top of the second, but poor pitching continued to haunt the team. The Falcons added eight more runs on four hits, three errors and a wild pitch in their second.

Keup pitched 0.2 innings and gave up six runs, all unearned because of inherited base runners errors, and three walks.

In the Spartans’ third call to the bullpen, senior Jake Swiech walked five and gave up five runs. Three of them were earned through 1.1 innings pitched.

The Falcons added two more in the third off a two run shot. The blitz ended with freshmen Frankie Scalzo and Wesley Clawson, who pitched a combined five innings while only allowing one earned run and one walk, but by the Spartans were waiting for their flight home.

Falcons junior Tyler Mortenson (1-4) had his best start of the season, allowing only one earned run off six hits.

The Spartans visit UC Davis Tuesday night.
