Men’s and women’s track and field struggle in Sacramento

By Madyson Montoya (@MadysonMontoya):

Both of San Jose State’s men’s and women’s track and field teams participated in the Hornet Invitational over the weekend in Sacramento.

It was a tough meet for SJSU as they competed against Stanford, UC Berkeley and Sacramento State.

SJSU brought a few of its male competitors to test out their abilities in only the 5000-meter and 1500-meter run.

Sophomore Jose Pina placed eighth in the 1500-meter with a time of 3.53.69, scoring the only two points for SJSU in the men’s division. Freshman Charlie Pope finished the event in 19th.

Freshman Evaristo Mateo and senior Josue Gonzalez were the two SJSU representatives in the 5000-meter event. Mateo finished in 27th with Gonzalez right behind him in 28th. Both runners finished in the top third of the event.

Long jump continues to be the Spartans shining event for the women as five jumpers finished in the top 10. Sophomore Destiny Longmire finished in second with a distance of 6.05 meters, just .01 behind the first place competitor.

Senior Cambree Harbaugh finished right behind Longmire in third with senior Nicole Iloanya in fifth and junior Brittany Brown in sixth.

Brown took home the only first-place title for SJSU in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of  14.09 second giving the Spartans 10 points added to their final score.

The Spartans would not earn a top 10 placing after that.

Sophomore Diamond Tabron took 16th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1.07.15, three seconds behind any competitor in the top 10. Freshman Lovenie Dantes finished the event in 33rd place.

The two Spartans in the finals for the 100-meter dash finished in the top 50 of 70 competitors. Sophomore Breya Carter in 45th and freshman Alicia Johnson in 48th.

Overall it wasn’t the best weekend for the track and field team. The women finished eighth out of the 10 schools, and the men’s representatives finished last.

The team heads to compete at the Rainbow Relays in Hawaii on March 23rd and 24th. No word has been said if the male competitors will be traveling as well.
