Bowman now 10-0, bats stay hot as Spartans beat SDSU

By Jenae Mims (@jenaemims_):

Three home runs were all the Spartans (17-9, 1-0 MW) needed for a 6-1 win over the Aztecs (9-18, 0-1 MW) saturday afternoon at Foothill College.

Junior first baseman and pitcher Madison Aurin was the first of three, hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the second.

“It was an inside pitch,” said Aurin. “Coach is really good at letting us know what the pitches are and making sure we are aware of them.”

Two innings later, freshman outfielder Jacey Phipps added two runs on the board with a pinch-hit homer to center field.

For the last homer of the day, sophomore infielder Cassidy Clark hit a solo home run to right center making it 6-0 in the fifth inning.

“We’re getting timely hits today that we didn’t get yesterday,” said head coach Peter Turner.

The Spartans kept the momentum throughout the game holding the Aztecs scoreless through five innings.

SDSU got on the board after freshman first baseman Taylor Adams hit a solo homer down center field.

Freshman Caroline Bowman threw for the Spartans, advancing her to a perfect 10-0 on the season.

Bowman used not just her arm, but her glove to aid in the Spartans win. In the second inning, Aztecs senior outfielder Zaria Meshack hit a grounder, Bowman caught it and tossed it to first base for an out for the Spartans.

“Our pitcher’s are making them earn it, they’re not walking people and they’re playing more of the defense,” said Turner.

The 3 hour and 36 minute game consisted of a one hour rain delay after the second inning, then a hail-delay in the final frame.

In the bottom of the sixth the rain persisted but the Spartans held their 6-1 lead and Bowman struckout three in the top of the seventh.

SJSU will go for the series sweep Sunday at Foothill College.

First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
