San Jose State baseball found its groove in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep against Sacramento State and the University of San Francisco.

The wins came largely from a lightly-staffed bullpen that pitched lights out, as well as the return of senior Brett Bautista.

With a 5-4 victory, the Spartans (4-4) beat the Hornets (2-5) in the first game, then later went on to defeat the Dons (4-3), 6-1.

After only scoring one run in its previous two games, SJSU adjusted to bring home 11 on Sunday.

The Spartans found an offensive spark early in game one, scoring three runs in the first inning and one in the second.

Junior Fineas Del-Bonta Smith took the mound for the Spartans against Sac State and pitched a gem until giving up four runs in the fourth inning to tie things up.

It was the first weekend back on the diamond for senior Brett Bautista. He went 6-for-12 with 5 RBIs over the three-game stretch.

Bautista singled in the fifth and go-ahead run in the fifth inning followed by four shutout innings by senior Josh Goldberg to secure the win for SJSU.

Senior David Campbell had two big hits and three RBIs on Sunday.

Freshman Nicholas Morales started the second game for the Spartans and allowed only one run in 5.1 innings of work.

In the second game, Bautista knocked in three of the six runs. The rest were contrubited by Campbell, senior Shane Timmons and sophomore Kellen Strahm.

The Spartans’ bullpen pitched 9.1 shutout innings over the two games which ultimately led to the sweep.

SJSU hopes to bring the winning mentality back home when it welcomes Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Tuesday. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
