Spartans go up against their tied conference competitor Utah State

By Madyson Montoya (@MadysonMontoya):

With Mountain West seeding implications on the line, San Jose State’s women’s basketball is on the road to face its tied conference opponent, Utah State.

SJSU’s (7-20, 4-12 MW) first conference win came against Utah State (6-21, 4-12 MW) back on Dec. 28 at the Event Center, 79-66.

The Spartans are coming off a close loss to San Diego State while the Aggies broke their five-game losing streak Saturday against Nevada.

SJSU has been developing a new offense with sophomore starter Taylor Turney out of the lineup for the last two games. Although there is no return date yet for Turney, the team was able to pull off a win without the point guard against the Wolf Pack.

The Spartans had four players score in double-figures in their last game, including freshmen Cydni Lewis and Mikaylah Wilson and seniors Myzhanique Ladd and Hallie Gennett.

The Aggies have the home court advantage, but with a young starting lineup it can be anyone’s game.

Rachel Brewster and Deja Mason are the only two upperclassmen on the Aggies roster, and with the Spartans also being a very young squad, it should pose an interesting matchup.

A win against Utah State will help SJSU’s standings going into the Mountain West basketball tournament next week.

The ball goes up tonight at 6 p.m.
