Ducks pitching too much for Spartans, dip to 9-7 on the season

San Jose State softball was held to three hits and five baserunners in a 1-0 loss to No. 5 Oregon Ducks to conclude the Mary Nutter Classic.

The Spartans (9-7) dropped four of the five games in the Cathedral City weekend tournament.

The first run of the game for the Ducks (12-3) came in the second inning.

Freshman right fielder Shaye Bowden hit an RBI single to left and drove in senior designated hitter Gwen Svekis.

Both teams were quiet after that until the seventh inning when the Ducks exploded for six more runs in the top half.

Prior to first pitch however, both squads agreed to a two hour time limit because of tight travel schedules.

The time period expired with one out in the bottom of the seventh with the Ducks ahead 7-0.

The decision wiped away the six-run inning since boths teams did not finish the full frame, therefore making the final score 1-0 Ducks.

Freshman third baseman Rayohna Sagapolu recorded two of SJSU’s three hits.

Sophomore Desiree Severance (2-1) was handed her first loss of the season as she pitched 4.1 innings, giving up the lone run, four hits and five base on balls.

Up next, the Spartans will take a short ride to face their neighbors, the Santa Clara Broncos, Wednesday at 6 p.m.
