Beach volleyball opens season at Cactus Classic

San Jose State beach volleyball started off the season at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz. over the weekend.

SJSU went 3-1 this weekend beating Abilene Christian twice on Saturday and Benedictine Mesa Sunday. The Spartans took their first lost to the hosts, the No. 9 Arizona Wildcats to close out the tournament.

In SJSU’s first match against Abilene Christian, all five pairs won their games in two sets to win 5-0. During its second match, the only pair to lose was senior Nandyala Gama and graduate student Lyndi Scholl who went 4-1.

Gama and Scholl started in the No. 1 position in both of the Saturday matches.

On Sunday, SJSU played Benedictine Mesa first. SJSU won 5-0, sweeping the team. In the match, senior Clara Reistad and junior Julia Golbeck played in the No. 1 position as Gama and Scholl moved down to No. 2.

In the matches SJSU won, all the games were finished in two sets.

The only loss of the weekend came when SJSU played Arizona. Two Spartan pairs were able to keep up with Wildcats but eventually lost in the third set.

Gama and Scholl were the first pair to lose in three sets., losing by 14 points in the first set. The pair were able to come back in the second winning 23-21 but lost in a close third set by two points.

The other pair to take Arizona to three sets was senior Breann Robinson and junior Luiza Andrade.

SJSU is set to play at West Valley College next Friday against West Valley and Cal.
