Spartans look to snap losing streak versus Aztecs

By Marissa Scott (@marissascotttt):

Junior Ryan Welage is one made 3-pointer away from the No. 1 spot on the all-time San Jose State leaderboard and he has a chance to do it at home against rival San Diego State.

SJSU (3-23, 0-15 MW) faced SDSU (16-10, 8-7 MW) earlier this season at the Viejas Arena and lost 85-49, its largest defeat in a conference game this season.

When the two schools last faced off, Welage sank his 1,000th career point and became the 15th player in SJSU history to hit the mark. He has since risen to the No. 7 spot on the scoring leaderboard with 1,200 points.

Prior to tipoff, SJSU Athletic Director Marie Tuite and head coach Jean Prioleau will present a 1,000-point basketball to Welage to honor the feat.

Redshirt freshman Keith Fisher should get a lot of minutes tonight unless he fouls out, which has been a problem lately. Fisher has been the engine of the Spartan offense throughout conference play as he has double-doubles in eight of the last 11 games.

The Spartans are riding a 15-game losing streak and have lost 20 of their last 21 games. They are following the footsteps of their 2014-2015 season when they went 0-18 in conference play.

The Aztecs are searching for a win to continue their near .500-or-better season record in conference play for the 14th straight season, a Mountain West best.

Last season, SJSU snapped a seven-game losing streak against SDSU at home with a 76-71 win and hope to snap another tonight.

Tipoff in the Event Center is set for 7 p.m.
